Executive summary

This report ranks 50 named candidates across eight European venues by market capitalisation converted to euro at the ECB reference rates for 24 September 2026, prints the largest twenty, and states the names nearest the line with the pool: a screen, not a recall of what the region is usually said to represent. Nine national and regional indices are compared on one stated basis, each row dated and sourced.

The first observation is dispersion wider than the phrase European equities suggests. Over the twelve months to the pricing date the nine index price returns run from +2.7% (CAC 40 (France)) to +30.0% (Athens General (Greece)). Composition explains more of that spread than any macro variable, and the sector section reads the two together.

The second observation is scale. The twenty largest European companies sum to €4,384bn, less than the largest US company alone (€4,771bn) and about half the two largest combined (€9,084bn). Europe's five largest sum to €1,676bn against €18,386bn for the US five, converted the same day at the same rate: a factor of 11x.

Key points
  • Twelve-month price returns run from +2.7% (CAC 40 (France)) to +30.0% (Athens General (Greece)) across the nine indices, on closes at the pricing date.
  • The twenty largest listed companies are worth €4,384bn together, about half the two largest US companies combined (€9,084bn); the largest three of the twenty are 27% of the total.
  • By sector the twenty are five consumer, four pharma, four industrial, two technology, two bank, two energy, one insurance; by venue, Paris 6, Zurich 4, London 3, Frankfurt 3, Madrid 2, Amsterdam 1, Copenhagen 1.
  • All nine indices are priced on one basis from one distributor, and the two the report can check against the venue that calculates them agree with it.
